Bible in 365 Days – Day 85

Focus Chapters:
- Joshua 12:7-24
- Joshua 13-14
- Joshua 15:1-19
Standout Verse(s):
Joshua 14:6-13 NLT
A delegation from the tribe of Judah, led by Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, came to Joshua at Gilgal. Caleb said to Joshua, “Remember what the Lord said to Moses, the man of God, about you and me when we were at Kadesh-barnea. I was forty years old when Moses, the servant of the Lord, sent me from Kadesh-barnea to explore the land of Canaan. I returned and gave an honest report, but my brothers who went with me frightened the people from entering the Promised Land. For my part, I wholeheartedly followed the Lord my God. So that day Moses solemnly promised me, ‘The land of Canaan on which you were just walking will be your grant of land and that of your descendants forever, because you wholeheartedly followed the Lord my God.’
“Now, as you can see, the Lord has kept me alive and well as he promised for all these forty-five years since Moses made this promise—even while Israel wandered in the wilderness. Today I am eighty-five years old. I am as strong now as I was when Moses sent me on that journey, and I can still travel and fight as well as I could then. So give me the hill country that the Lord promised me. You will remember that as scouts we found the descendants of Anak living there in great, walled towns. But if the Lord is with me, I will drive them out of the land, just as the Lord said.”
So Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave Hebron to him as his portion of land.
Observation (s):
- Caleb waited 45 years for the promise made to him to be fulfilled.
I was forty years old when Moses, the servant of the Lord, sent me from Kadesh-barnea to explore the land of Canaan. Today I am eighty-five years old.
- Caleb waited until land was being assigned to the various tribes to remind Joshua of the promise that was made to him.

- Although his promise was assigned to him, Caleb had to fight, with God by his side, to attain it.

Application:
We live in a world of instant gratification. We don’t know how to wait or have the patience to wait. The truth is, some of us don’t want to wait! We believe that God’s promises must be fulfilled now or not at all. Oftentimes, if we don’t see the fulfillment of God’s promises to us, based on our immediate timing:
- We lose trust and faith and try to force things our way (making a muck of things) or,
- We begin to question God. “God, you promised me ________, why hasn’t it come yet?”
Caleb waited 45 years for God’s promise to be fulfilled. Throughout the 45-year period, he kept quiet and bid his time. At the opportune moment, when land was being distributed, he chose to remind his leader of the promise that was made to him. In that moment, land, not yet conquered, was assigned to him and Caleb and God undertook the task of conquering what God had set apart for him.
We can learn a lot from Caleb:
- Trust in God’s promises, no matter how long they take to be fulfilled.
- While you are waiting, keep quiet and watch for the opportune moment.
- When the opportune moment arrives, don’t be afraid to speak and/or conquer what has been set apart for you.
- Don’t set out to conquer without God.
One thing is true, if we wholeheartedly follow God, like Caleb, God’s promises are sure!
