Application:

When I hear the word vow, I generally get fixed on the aura of solemnity. According to Cambridge Online, to vow is “to make a firm promise or decision to do something”. The truth is, we make vows (covenants or pledges) all the time. When we participate in an auction, every bid is a covenant that you will pay for and take the item you want secured for you. When you take out a loan or mortgage, the contract is a pledge that you will make the repayments. When we sign a job contract, we are promising that we will deliver on the terms outlined in our job descriptions. Each time we make a promise or “pinky swear”, we make a commitment that we will deliver.

We find it easy to uphold our commitments in the physical realm while ignoring our spiritual vows. Does this sound familiar? “Lord, if you [do something], I will [do something]. How many times have you promised the Lord that you will do something that you never deliver on? Do not make promises that you can’t or don’t intend to uphold. Most importantly, honour the vows and “pinky swears” you make to God.
