Whenever Moses went into the Tabernacle to speak with the Lord, he heard the voice speaking to him from between the two cherubim above the Ark’s cover—the place of atonement—that rests on the Ark of the Covenant. The Lord spoke to him from there.

Application:
As a child, I read stories of parents who expected their children to wash up before dinner. The child was not allowed to sit at the table and commune with his/her parents until he/she was clean. God takes a similar approach with us. He only spoke to Moses from above the place of atonement and Moses could only hear God’s voice from above that same spot. The place of atonement acted as a communication barrier opener! God spoke but Moses could not hear Him from anywhere else.
Atonement refers to the action of making amends for a sin, wrong or injury. We cannot come to the table dirty and expect to be served. We have to make amends by going to the place where atonement can be made, where we are cleansed. Only by a spiritual covering of our sins are we granted access to the dinner table and hearing clearly when God speaks.
How do you approach the mercy throne? Do you try to sit at the dinner table and commune with God with no concern for your spiritual appearance? This may be the reason why you are unable to hear from God. Try approaching God, following a cleansing at the place of atonement, the communication barrier opener.
